Option to use original Nintendo DS screen resolution on Nintendo 3DS

The Nintendo 3DS has an improved screen as opposed to its predecessors, one of the key reasons is the higher resolution. When playing DS titles on the Nintendo 3DS, the games are stretched out to use the full screen, a blur filter is then applied to counter any form of pixilation.

It has been said that Nintendo DS games look fine stretched out and that the improved 3DS display helps produce a more rich and vibrant image. For those who prefer a smaller and sharper image, Nintendo has included the option to shrink down the screens to the original Nintendo DS resolution.

By holding down the Start and Select buttons as a Nintendo DS title boots up, the screens will adjust to the original 256x192 resolution. The Nintendo DS screen resolution will leave a thick black border on both the touch screen and top screen, it is rather unattractive but at least the option is there for those who wish to use it.

Handheld gaming with Nintendo 3DS 3D technology

Movies like "Avatar" and "Tron Legacy" are going to have a lot in common with video game characters like Mario and Link. Coming soon all of these things will be available in the palm of your hand, in striking 3D, without the need for special glasses.

Nintendo, the company that revolutionized gaming with consoles such as the NES, Wii and Nintendo DS will be releasing its latest handheld iteration with the Nintendo 3DS March 27.

This handheld gaming and media platform enables users to play 3D games. Such as launch title Super Street Fighter IV 3D edition, which offers both local and global online multiplayer and 3D re-imaginings of iconic Nintendo classics such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Star Fox 64, both due out later this year.

Along with 3D games, the Nintendo 3DS will also support viewing movies in 3D. Like Nintendo's previous handheld, the DSi, the Nintendo 3DS has two built-in digital cameras. This time however, these cameras work together to take 3D photographs and are rumored to take 3D video.

The Nintendo 3DS also includes a built-in motion and gyro sensor that reacts to the motion and tilt of the system, creating the potential for further immersing the player into the 3D game.

PSIDPatch 1.5 Released - PSN Returns for Banned Consoles

PSIDPatch 1.5 arrived today and may be the saving grace for currently banned users. The program allows users to change their PSID, a unique identifier which console banning relies on. Reports are coming in that if you are able to get another legitimate unbanned PSID, you can use this program to change your banned PSID to the unbanned clean PSID. As stated the new PSID must be legitimate or you will get an error message. Your best bet in getting a clean PSID is to borrow a friend or family member's.

Features:
+ Shows you current PSID
+ Shows you current Console ID
+ Patch PSID from dev_usb/psid.txt
+ Patch PSID to random number
+ Patch Console ID from dev_usb/consoleid.txt
+ Patch ConsoleID (line 2) to random number
+ Choose USB to load from

Usage:
Install package
Run PSIDPatch
Press Cross to patch PSID with a random number, or Square to patch ConsoleID.
Or.. if you want to use your own:
Create a text file called psid.txt/consoleid.txt on root of your USB
Put 32 hex characters inside (e.g. 1234567890ABCDEFFEDCBA0987654321) or 64 for ConsoleID
Open PSIDPatch, choose your USB using Up/Down arrows and press R1 to patch.

Technical Stuff:
PSID starts at 0x800000000044A18C in 3.41, 0x800000000045218C in 3.55. It is 16 bytes long.
Two identicle Console ID's exist in memory: one which is 32 bytes at 0x80000000003C2EF0 and another which is 16 bytes at 0x8000000000452174. PSN seems to use the second one, but PSIDPatch patches both.

AFAIK console id spoofing doesn't work, Sony might operate on a whitelist basis... If somebody can message me their console id, I'd be happy to try it out on mine to see if it could be something else.

Nintendo 3DS US launch confirmed. Nintendo has now officially announced that it is going to release - not 13, but - 18 revised and formalized glasses-free Nintendo 3DS handheld games.

Legend of Zelda is still conspicuous by its absence and Tom Clancy's second game Splinter Cell 3D (Ubisoft) has also been dropped off. However, there is hopeful speculation that Nintendo has saved it for release later in the year.

People are still looking for revisions of The Legend of Zelda, Metal Gear Solid, Kid Icarus, Resident Evil, Dead or Alive, and Star Fox 64. Among these, most are on track for 2011, but Zelda is expected sometime in June this very year.

The genre are the usual popular ones of fighting and sports games to a couple platformers, a military-themed shooter, and a flight sim. After Super-bowl, Madden NFL comes as a surprise, but it is being presumed that EA's planning another update around NFL 2011 kickoff in September.

The list contain those that have been appearing in the guessed list, with the few additions. The list is:
Asphalt 3D (Ubisoft)
Bust-a-Move Universe (Square Enix)
Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D (Ubisoft)
LEGO Star Wars III The Clone Wars (LucasArts)
Madden NFL Football (Electronic Arts)
nintendogs + cats Golden Retriever & New Friends (Nintendo)
nintendogs + cats French Bulldog & New Friends (Nintendo)
nintendogs + cats Toy Poodle & New Friends (Nintendo)
Pilotwings Resort (Nintendo)
Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D (Konami)
Rayman 3D (Ubisoft)
Ridge Racer 3D (Namco Bandai)
Samurai Warriors: Chronicles (Tecmo Koei)
The Sims 3 (Electronic Arts)
Steel Diver (Nintendo)
Super Monkey Ball 3D (Sega)
Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition (Capcom)
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Shadow Wars (Ubisoft)

The Nintendo 3DS games will be available in March 27 in the U.S.

More impressions of Nintendo 3DS games

nintendo-3ds-Game Accessories

Although I was most impressed by the Nintendo 3DS AR games, I did have a chance to quickly play a few other titles on the handheld. Here’s a roundup and thoughts on them:

Face Raiders: This is another release that comes preinstalled on the Nintendo 3DS. The game is a shooter but the gimmick is that the enemies are your friends. Riffing off Photo Dojo,the do-it-yourself fighting game, players take mugshots of their friends and Face Raiders turns the images into enemies in an augmented reality shooter.

Players will have to tap the right shoulder button to fire at enemies. They’ll have to physically move around and dodge their fire. There’s even a boss fight at the end, where players have to shoot at spiked balls so that they fly toward big bad, damaging it. For all intents and purposes, it works and it even excels if you’re playing on a swivel chair.

nintendo-3ds-Game Accessories

Steel Diver: I expected to be astounded by this submarine title. I heard that playing it with the 3D on is like looking into an aquarium. Sadly, it wasn’t all true. The game is a 2D sidescroller that moves fairly slow. Part of the reason is the controls: Players have to manual move a lever on the touchscreen to rise and fall and touch another to move forward and backward. You don’t use the face buttons or directional pad all that much. There’s also a slight delay as the sub moves changes moment beneath the sea.

All in all, the game has a Steel Batallion feel. There’s a lot going on with the touchscreen controls, plenty of dials and readings to pay attention to. You even have to plug in breaches in the hull by pressing the stylus or your finger against the touchscreen. The one element that works well is the periscope. In this mode, the sub rises to the surface and players have turn their bodies just as though they were looking through an actual periscope. While they’re doing that, they have to aim their torpedos and fire at battleships and other vessels. It’s another situation that’s ideal for swivel chairs. All these 3DS games work so well like that I figure Nintendo should come up with their own licensed seat.

nintendo-3ds-Game Accessories

Pilotwings Resort: I’ve alway been interested in the Pilotwings series since it launched on the Super Nintendo 20 years ago. The only problem was that interest never actually converted to a sale — until now. When Pilotwings Resort comes out, that’s the 3DS title I’ll be picking up. Of all the games I played so far, it’s the one that uses the 3D best (aside from the AR games). You get a sensation of depth as you buzz past landmarks on Nintendo’s Woohoo Island, a place that’s beginning to show up in several games. It’s basically Shigeru Miyamoto’s Yoknapatawpha County.

Along with flying a plane, you can take a rocket belt that has some funny control mechanics. You have to fly up and hover for a moment, before twisting the rockets on the belt horizontally to move forward. You have to constantly do this and fly between rings before your fuel runs out. Lastly, you can take a hang glider out for a spin. It doesn’t have any mechanical parts or use fuel to get around. Instead, you have to glide atop hot spots so that you get lifted higher and maneuver to another part of the map.

The Sims 3 is “a fairly pedestrian port”

Joystiq got their hands on with The Sims 3 and while it’s not all bad, they’re not going to be put in charge of public relations for the game anytime soon. They admit that a couple of the features are sort of cool, like the ability to create Sims based on a snapshot of yourself (or your friends) using the 3D camera.

Plus, if you ever happen to walk past another player who has the Nintendo 3DS in their pocket and a save file for The Sims 3 your Sims will be automatically exchanged, and your neighbourhood will start filling with new citizens from people you’ve passed. But even those ideas don’t save what Joystiq considers to be “a fairly pedestrian port.” Sounds like a game worth avoiding.

Which games in the Japanese launch lineup make the best use of 3DS-exclusive features?

How well are developers making use of the functionality that’s present in the Nintendo 3DS hardware and software? Famitsu magazine has done a writeup featuring all the functionality present in the Japanese launch lineup of Nintendo 3DS games, and andriasang has done a translation. But just because I’m a nice fellow I threw together this spreadsheet that gives you a birds-eye view of what features can be found in each game.

Japan Review Check: Nintendo 3DS Launch Edition

nintendo-3ds-Game Accessories

nintendo-3ds-Game Accessories

Ask the editors of Japanese game magazine Famitsu what their favorite Nintendo 3DS launch game is, and the answer's pretty clear. "The play style hasn't changed much from the old game, but Nintendogs + Cats still has plenty of new surprises," one of them wrote in this week's new issue. "The 'cute' level of the puppies and kittens has really shot up from the first one, and just watching their expressions and mannerisms is a great stress relief."

The Nintendo 3DS pet-raising sequel netted two 10's and two 9's from the magazine's review crew for a total of 38 points. That's not quite the perfect 40/40 score that Famitsu gave the original Nintendogs in 2005, but it was still enough to outscore the rest of the games hitting Japanese stores alongside the Nintendo 3DS system this Saturday. (The US launch won't be until March 27.)

As for the rest of the Japan launch lineup, the picture Famitsu painted largely seemed to be "if you like the franchise, you might as well buy the 3DS version of it." "Super Monkey Ball's motion sensor controls are kind of nice," another reviewer said. "It's not really suited for 3D, but the rush you get when you're right on the edge of falling is still fun as always." Meanwhile, "Ridge Racer 3D brings you back to the Ridge of a simpler time -- which sounds like a slam, but it's true. From the competition to the drifting, it encapsulates what makes racing games fun really well."

Some more quotes from Famitsu's Nintendo 3DS game reviews:

- Super Street Fighter IV: "The way you can use the touch screen to launch even charge moves in an instant is actually kind of revolutionary for the series, a change that I think could lead to some neat new tactics. Despite that, the controls can still be very difficult at times, even with the ability to redefine buttons. Whether you're able to overlook that will define your overall the opinion of the game."

- Dynasty Warriors Nintendo 3DS: "Nothing has changed much in the DW formula, but switching between characters while shouting out orders to your side gives this game a new sort of real-time strategy feel. Going 3D makes it easier to gauge positioning between yourself and enemies, which makes the game easier overall."

- Nintendogs + Cats: "The sheer fuzziness factor on all the pets is too cute. Watching them totter around in 3D is so calming, and the act of petting them has much more of a you-are-there feel to it. Keeping a dog and cat together gives you a huge number of must-see moments, and the ability to interact quickly and easily with other pet owners is great."

- Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle: "The simple interface and screen setup is similar to the rest of the series and put together very well. The animated parts are in 3D and there are a variety of new features and game gimmicks, but the play style hasn't changed much. It's a natural progression for the series, 3D support included."

- Super Monkey Ball Nintendo 3DS: "Having three different games to enjoy is great, although the Monkey Fight and Race bits are rehashes of other titles and not all that exciting. The core Monkey Ball game, though, uses 3D in a variety of gimmicks and traps to make the whole experience a lot more impactful and exciting. It's simple to learn and highly addictive."

- Ridge Racer 3D: "The courses are full of floaty jumps and other gimmicks to get you inside the game more. Racing across them is pretty fun, and the drifting (which tends to throw off beginners in other games) is simple to pull off. The rival cars you race in Grand Prix mode and so on are pretty tough, though, and I wonder if the game's still too hard overall. A difficulty selection would have been nice."

Super Monkey Ball 3D supports Play Coins, lots of shaking will do the trick (eventually)

nintendo-3ds-Game Accessories

Sega has confirmed that you will be able to unlock characters in Super Monkey Ball 3D using the Play Coins system. But that’s not too interesting. What I found amusing is that a Sega rep has said that “testers have no way to cheat the system and earn coins in a hurry, so they’ve been spending time shaking 3DSes in the air, trying to simulate steps. He says it took a couple of hours to earn the 20 needed for an unlock.”

The Nintendo 3DS Pizza Party starts at 8pm PST on February 25th (and you’re invited)

nintendo-3ds-Game Accessories

We’re less than 24 hours away from the launch of the Nintendo 3DS over here in Japan and things are going to get pretty crazy. Aside from getting my hands on the 3DS and making lots of videos, Rollo and I will be hosting “The Nintendo 3DS Pizza Party,” where we’ll kick back for a couple of hours and chat with readers via Ustream. There’s no specific plan for this stream. We’ll just show off the Nintendo 3DS, answer some questions and eat some pizza. Sounds like perfection to me.

The show starts at 8PM PST on February 25th. That sounds earlier than it should be, but because of the wonder of time zones, it will actually be the 26th over here in Japan at that time.

Introducing the Nintendo 3DS system. Experience incredible gameplay featuring real 3D graphics that do not require any special glasses or additional accessories. Nintendo 3DS is a breakthrough in portable entertainment, a truly cutting-edge piece of hardware that has to be seen to be believed.

Hardware Features

3D Screen

Like previous handhelds released by Nintendo, the Nintendo 3DS incorporates both an upper and lower LCD display in a clamshell layout. The lower screen features familiar Nintendo touchscreen technology, is 3.02" (2.42" wide x 1.81" high) with 320 x 240 pixel resolution and is capable of displaying 16.77 million colors, but the groundbreaking upper 3D screen of the Nintendo 3DS system is where Nintendo opens up a whole new world of eye-popping gameplay possibilities. This 3.53" display (3.02" wide x 1.81" high) is capable of displaying approximately the same 16.77 million colors, but with 800 x 240 pixel resolution. 400 pixels are allocated to each eye to enable 3D viewing.

This stereoscopic 3D display gives objects within the gameworld a feeling of space and depth that extends far into the back of the screen. This amazing depth of field effect vastly increases the ability to see the position of characters and obstacles in compatible game, making many game experiences even more intuitive for all types of players.

3D Depth Slider

A built-in 3D Depth Slider along the right side of the top display allows you to immediately adjust the intensity of the 3D settings on the Nintendo 3DS system to your liking. The 3D effect can also be turned down completely if the player so chooses. All Nintendo 3DS games and applications can be played in 2D, and look better when played on the Nintendo 3DS than any Nintendo handheld before it.

Motion Sensor and Gyro Sensor

Portable play control reaches a new level with the Nintendo 3DS' Motion Sensor and Gyro Sensor combination. Together these precision built-in features allow for new and unique gameplay mechanics as the 3DS reacts to real-time motion and tilt. Whether players are twisting their systems side to side, or moving it up and down, their motion-compatible Nintendo 3DS games respond instantly.

Circle Pad Analog Control

With the Circle Pad, located above the + Control Pad, Nintendo 3DS offers full analog control in 3D game worlds. Combined with the touch screen, traditional buttons, camera and microphone input, and advanced motion control of the Motion Sensor and Gyro Sensor, the potential is extraordinary.

3D Camera Functionality

Along with a digital camera facing inwards towards the player, the Nintendo 3DS system features two outer cameras positioned along its upper edge when device is open. These two cameras see the world in 3D, much like the human eye, allowing for the creation of 3D photos - and a similar 3D effect to that seen in Nintendo 3DS games. All cameras feature 640 x 480 resolutions with single focus lenses that use the CMOS capture element and an active pixel count is approximately 300,000 pixels.

Adjustable Stylus

The adjustable Nintendo 3DS Stylus takes the idea of touch control to a new and even more user-friendly level. Once removed from the holder, the stylus length can be adjusted to your liking with a simple push or pull. Now anyone can achieve the optimum level of comfort while playing games that use the stylus.

Cradle Charging

Dock your Nintendo 3DS system whenever you are not using it in the included Charging Cradle to keep it powered. You can then leave the system on in Sleep Mode while charging, so that it can communicate via the SpotPass feature at any time of day or night.

Other Key Features

StreetPass

Social and wired like no Nintendo system before it, Nintendo 3DS brings fellow players together in exciting new ways with StreetPass communication. Set your Nintendo 3DS to Sleep Mode and carry it with you wherever you go to exchange game data like Mii characters, high scores, and custom characters with other users you pass on the street. You control what data you exchange and you can exchange data for multiple games at once, making virtual connections with real world people you encounter in your daily life.

SpotPass

Nintendo 3DS includes SpotPass, a feature that lets Nintendo 3DS detect wireless hotspots or wireless LAN access points and obtain information, game data, free software, videos and so on for players even when the system is in sleep mode.*
2 GB SD Memory Card Included

Every Nintendo 3DS system comes packed with a 2 GB SD memory card. You can use this SD memory card to store your 3D photos, and sound recordings created on the Nintendo 3DS system, and music** from your PC. You can also use it to store games downloaded from the Nintendo eShop. The Nintendo 3DS system has SDHC card compatibility to increase your storage space even further.

Backwards Compatibility

Almost all existing Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games can be played on a Nintendo 3DS system in 2D. With backwards compatibility, your existing portable games look and play just as well.

Wireless Communications

Nintendo 3DS utilizes a frequency of 2.4 GHz, enabling local wireless communication among multiple Nintendo 3DS systems for game play and StreetPass, as well as access to the Internet through wireless LAN access points (supports IEEE802.11 b/g with the WPA/WPA2 security feature). Recommended distance of wireless communication is within 98.4 feet. This can be shorter depending on the environmental situation.

Homebrew Game Pintor Released by Hermes - Sony vs Hackers

ps3-games-hdd-Game Accessories

Spanish dev, Hermes, brings us Pintor, a rather humorous homebrew game which pokes fun of Sony's excessive, PS3 related lawsuits. In the game, you play the role of "John Doe" and must avoid SCEA's attorneys who are "blinded by greed". Hermes created the game as a tribute to fail0verflow's git repository, which was unjustly removed by Sony's attorneys. The game is based on a video game that Hermes previously made for the PS2 and that has been ported to countless systems since.

Next PS3 SKU Rumored Hack Proof

ps3-games-hdd-Game Accessories

The PS3 jailbreak that was released last summer was the precursor for things to come for Sony, as things became progressively worse for the console maker. George Hotz's USB based jailbreak made it extremely easy to jailbreak the PS3, which opened it's security to allow installation of packages among other things, like installation of custom firmwares that allowed piracy, game hacks, and other vulnerabilities.

Sony has since been working vigilantly to sew these security breaches, by way of the law. And aside from seeking legal recourse from those that are responsible for releasing and distributing the hack, they are now banning PS3 consoles from the PSN. An unverified rumor has been making it's rounds that one of Sony's next plans, is to release a hack-proof version of the console. This hack-proof PS3 will weigh in at the $300.00 price point and include a 300 GB PS3 HDD.

Sony working on hack-proof PlayStation 3 with 300GB hard drive

ps3-games-hdd-Game Accessories

When hackers at last year’s Chaos Congress unveiled the method with which they had ascertained the PlayStation 3 master key, it was immediately evident to most that the PlayStation 3 had just been irrevocably hacked. The master key, after all, allows any bit of code to pass itself off as officially Sony-sanctioned code. Worse, the key is hardcoded into every PlayStation 3, so Sony can’t just change it. That means that every existing PlayStation 3 can be jailbroken forever.

Since the master key was released, Sony’s gone through a lot of trouble to try to take the pee out of the swimming pool, as it were, famously suing the hackers who discovered the master key. Everyone knowledgeable about security, though, knew the only thing Sony could do was issue new hardware that uses a new (and better encrypted) master key.

It now appears that’s exactly what Sony’s in the process of doing. Following some recent price drops around the PS3, an anonymous source close to Sony now says that the console maker is deep into plans of developing a new, hack-proof PS3 system, presumably using a new master key.

According to the report, he hack-proof SKU will be a PS3 Slim containing a 300GB PS3 hard drive. That hard drive is meant to be the incentive to upgrade, since the new system will cost about $299 when it is released… which is exactly the same price as the current 160GB model.

Sony’s best hope against piracy at this point is getting people to replace their PlayStation 3s… a tack Sony’s taken before with their hacker-friendly PSP. My guess, though, is a bigger hard drive at the same price isn’t going to entice many hackers now getting their entire game libraries for free.

Some of the duties listed for the two positions include overseeing civil lawsuits, providing support to law enforcement, and "how to find owner, administrator, ISP associated with a given domain name, etc."

Nintendo Reveals Launch-Day Lineup of 18 Nintendo 3DS Games

On day one, new Nintendo 3DS owners will have plenty of video games to keep them busy. Nintendo and its third-party publishing partners have made sure that people who buy a system on March 27 will be able to choose from a variety of experiences that leverage the system's new features. A steady and diverse stream of games of all kinds will keep the fun going, with more than 30 Nintendo 3DS games total launching before the E3 Expo in early June.

"Seeing 3D visuals without the need for special glasses is just one aspect of Nintendo 3DS," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. Nintendo 3DS `could strain eyes`

The latest Nintendo DS console, which offers 3D entertainment, could create eye problems in some people, an expert has claimed.

Larry Benjamin, vice-president of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, tested the new Nintendo 3DS on behalf of the Independent and said the 3D technology used in the device is "remarkable".

However, he noticed that the quality of the screen is dependent on how the user is positioned and claimed that being just five degrees off the ideal viewing angle could lead to the eyes becoming tired.

"I think it's fair to warn people they may experience eye strain, double vision or difficulty focusing [when playing the console]. I think it'd be sensible to do longer-term trials on it," Mr Benjamin told the newspaper.

A spokesman for Nintendo said that the firm has not heard of people experiencing problems because of the new device and reminded gamers that they should be taking regular breaks.

According to a disclaimer on Nintendo's website, the use of the system's 3D feature has a risk of "vision damage" for children aged six and under.

Cave Story is coming to the 3DS

nintendo-3ds-Game Accessories

At their annual press event, publisher NIS America announced that the indie hit Cave Story would be released for the Nintendo 3DS handheld. On hand was Daisuke Ayama, creator of Cave Story, and Tyrone Rodriguez of developer Nicalis who will be handling development duties.

Details are few and far between at this point--there wasn't even a release date announced--but the presentation did feature several screenshots and target renders of the environments and character models, which we've embedded below for your viewing pleasure.

Cave Story has already garnered an audience thanks to successful versions on both the PC and the WiiWare service, but the 3D feature might be enough to convince even old fans to revisit the title when it releases on the Nintendo 3DS.

Nintendo 3DS hands-on

Nintendo's next portable is still a few weeks away, but we got an extended hands-on session with one of the most buzzed-about products of 2011. Read on for our thoughts on the Nintendo 3DS.

What we're talking about: The Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo's 3D-focused portable coming out next month.

Where we saw it: Members of Nintendo's PR group and its Treehouse localization division brought the system to our office late last week.

What I knew: I had observed the system very briefly during E3-I'm talking a minute's worth of hands-on time (if that) with a minimally interactive 3D image. Fortunately, my recent demo of Super Street Fighter IV 3D provided far more time with the system (as well as more reason to be excited for its release).

What you need to know:

There are some impressive pieces of software shipping with the system. The portable ships with six AR (alternate reality) Cards-I was able to try one out that required me to strategically circle the couch in the GamePro demo room, shooting at targets on a castle before taking on a dragon that emerged from the rubble.

Another fun diversion comes pre-loaded on the system, as Face Raider used a 3D photo of my face to populate the enemy troops that fly towards your screen, Space Invaders-style. The system will include other faces within the game from time to time, as PC World's Alex Wawro came across mine when Nintendo visited our sister publication later in the day.

There's a few cool media utilities included on the Nintendo 3DS. The system's Spotpass download feature will allow Nintendo 3DS owners to watch 3D trailers. I watched a video for 'Born to Be Wild,' which I thought was the most impressive 3D trailer yet after viewing it before a showing of Tron 3D on IMAX.

While watching the video on a 3.5-inch SD screen didn't create the same level of awe, I think certain movies (like Pixar and Dreamworks CGI films) could find a market on the portable as long as they're priced properly. The system's music playback feature (called '3D sound) now includes MP3 compatibility, which should allow for more customizable game soundtracks. I look forward to hearing more about that particular feature-- it has to have the '3D' moniker for a reason, right?

Nintendo 3DS day one launch games

We're almost to March, the big month of spring releases, the Game Developers Conference, and PAX East. In the calm before the storm, a list of Nintendo 3DS launch titles takes our top story.

Nintendo of America sent out a press release this morning announcing the Nintendo 3DS titles available for the console at launch March 27, 2011.

* Pilotwings Resort
* Steel Diver
* nintendogs + cats
* Super Street Fighter IV 3D
* The Sims 3
* Madden NFL Football
* Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D
* LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars
* Ridge Racer 3D
* Super Monkey Ball 3D
* Bust-a-Move Universe
* Samurai Warriors: Chronicles
* Asphalt 3D
* Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D
* Rayman 3D
* Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Shadow Wars

The news here are the games that didn't make the cut like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Star Fox 64 3D. Nintendo has a history of holding its first-party titles until the company feels they are "done," but we're still surprised to see the Nintendo 3DS hitting shelves with no actual Nintendo blockbuster franchise leading the charge (Nintendogs and Pilot Wings notwithstanding). As for how long it will be before we can pick up those titles, who can say. The "launch window" could be months long.

First Look - N64 Emulator Alpha Version on PS3

An exciting new emulator project surfaced today. A team of three guys has taken on the challenge of porting a Nintendo 64 emulator to the PS3. The project seems to have been underway for some time, as progress is quite far. The team has released three videos showcasing that the emulator is in playable form but still needs some work.

Currently the emulator is 1 player only via keyboard, graphics work excellent for most games tried, and the emu has no audio support. The team has made no indications on when a release will occur, but it doesn't seem too far off.

Nintendo 3DS Beginners’ Guide

Experience 3D Without Glasses

What the DS did for touchscreen gaming, the Nintendo 3DS does for 3D gaming. For the first time, you will be able to see 3D visual effects in a natural way, without the need for glasses. The 3D effects are truly ground breaking but they are just the tip of the ice berg.

Play a Massive Selection of Exclusive Nintendo 3DS Games

Games developers are so excited about the Nintendo 3DS that they are working on the largest collection of games be launched with any system in history. There really is something for everyone. There’s Professor Layton for puzzle fans, Spongebob Squarepants for Children, Metal Gear Solid for hardcore gamers, Steel Driver for strategy fans and The Sims for everyone else. That’s just a fraction of the games available for Nintendo 3DS. To see more watch the video below or take a look at our list of Nintendo 3DS games.

See Awesome Visual Effects

The screen offers a higher resolution meaning the games you play will appear more defined and crisper. It’s the portable equivalent of upgrading from standard TV to an HDTV.

To see what I mean, compare to the pictures below. You can see the Nintendo 3DS is a vast improvment over the DS and that’s before you add in the 3D effects.

Animal Crossing - DS

Animal Crossing - 3DS

The Nintendo 3DS larger screens also make it easier to appreciate all these improvements. The visual effects go even further than that though. Improved processing power means characters and game worlds can feature much more detail.

Realistic graphics like this were not possible before Nintendo 3DS

Take 3D Photos

Not only can you play games on the Nintendo 3DS, you can also use it to create your own 3D photos. Take pictures with the 3DS and it will be the start of your first 3D photo collection to share with friends and post online.

Interact With Like-Minded People Around You

If you see someone playing a Nintendo 3DS when you’re out, you can challenge them to a game through the console. Especially intriguing is the idea that even when you’re not aware of it, your Nintendo 3DS can interact with others while it is turned “off” in your pocket or bag. Your Nintendo 3DS will communicate with others it passes to exchange game data. When you turn your Nintendo 3DS back on, you’ll discover new things. You might be able to race against the best lap times of someone you passed while you were shopping or see if your Pokemon won any battles against other people’s. The possibilities for this exciting new feature are still being explored but you can expect many new ways to play. See the video to get a better idea of how this works.

Turn Reality Into a Game

Using the 3D camera, you can make the world around you part of the game. For example, look at a table through the screen of your Nintendo 3DS and you might see little monsters running around it. This is another technology which is still being experimented with but has many truly exciting possibilities. The video above also includes a look at this technology.
Relive Classic Games

As well as being able to play games from the original DS (meaning their are already 100s of games available), you can download Gameboy classics like Tetris.

Enjoy Motion Control

As with the Nintendo Wii, motion and gyro sensors bring new ways to play. Turn your Nintendo 3DS to steer around corners or literally shake off the badies.

Watch 3D Films, Listen to Music, Browse the Internet, Download Apps, Stay Fit!

The Nintendo 3DS is a portable media centre. It is the only way you can watch 3D films without glasses. You can also store and listen to a digital music collection on the system.

You can now do multiple things at once. For example, you can pause a game, take a look at a website and get straight back to the game without interruption. Finally, Nintendo 3DS can keep track of how much walking you have done to aid you with your fitness. As if this wasn’t enough, you’ll also be able to download apps to do just about anything with your new handheld companion.

When Can I Have One?

They go on sale on 25 March 2011 in Europe and 27 March in North America.

Use the Wii remote to control your PC

Wii hacking is all the rage, and crafty folk have been piecing together some really interesting things using the Wii remote. One of the easiest and most useful hacks is using your Wii remote as a mouse to control your PC. It may seem like magic, but all you need is a bluetooth adapter, a Wii remote, and a piece of free software you can download from the internet. That's... it! It's so easy, in fact, the latest issue of Games for Windows published a one-page article outlining how to Wii-ify your very own PC! Check out a summary below, then head over to LiquidIce's Nintendo Wii Hacks page for an in-depth discussion on methods, software and hardware for using the Wii Remote with your computer.

1. Get Bluetooth

Many laptops come equipped with Bluetooth built in, so if you have a notebook, do some checking before you head to the store. Otherwise you'll need to purchase a USB Bluetooth adapter . Make sure it supports Widcomm or BlueSoleil. Two choices Games for Windows guarantees are the Belkin Bluetooth USB Adapter F8T012v and Targus USB Bluetooth Adapter.

2. Let the Wii Remote recognize your PC

Do this either by pressing 1+2 at the same time or by hitting the little red button behind the battery cover.

3. Get the software

Two popular drivers are available on the internet, one is a bit more powerful (GlovePIE) while the other more user friendly Wii Remote .

4. Wait and watch

The homebrew community has just begun exploring the potential of the Wii remote and PC use. For now it's good for basic controls and works in many games, so right off the bat you're in for a motion-sensitive-flavored treat. Soon nunchuk support will be available! Keep an eye on LiquidIce's Nintendo Wii Hacks and House of Nintendo for the latest news.

Hack Your Wii for Homebrew without Twilight Princess

We have showed you how to use the Twilight Princess hack to install the Homebrew Channel and various goodies like DVD playback. The bannerbomb exploit is the newest way to install the Homebrew Channel and works on the newest systems, unlike Twilight Princess—which has been a defunct hack since menu 4.0 was introduced.

How does it work? The hack exploits the Wii menu itself, loading a fake banner which causes a system crash and allows the exploit to load unsigned code. During our field testing it took—not counting time to carefully read the instructions and take photographs—less than ten minutes to complete the process.

For this hack you'll need a Wii, an SD card formatted to FAT, a copy of the bannerbomb file, and the HackMii installer. The following instructions are an expanded photo-pictorial version of the instructions found .

You'll need to copy the files from your computer to the SD card. If you're using an SD card you already use for the Wii, you'll need to rename the "private" directory to "privateold" for the duration of the hack.

First, unzip the contents of the banner bomb exploit onto the card. This should create a "private" directory with the contents of the zip file.

Next, copy the installer.elf file from the HackMii installer onto the root of the SD card and rename it to boot.elf—as seen above.

Once you have the files on the SD card, it's time to toss it in the Wii and boot up.

Here we are at the initial main menu of the Wii. Nothing special to see here except for the fact that it's been over a week since we've hopped on the Wii Fit.

Click on the circular Wii icon in the lower left corner. DO NOT click on the SD card icon if you've got a newer or updated Wii with the 4.0 menu. You won't hurt your Wii, but the exploit won't work.

Once you've clicked on the Wii icon, you'll be in the sub-menu seen above. Click on Data Management to access the next menu.

Click on Channels to get to the SD card. You won't be able to access it via the Save Data tab.

Click on the SD card tab to load the exploit.

The Wii will ask you "Load boot.dol/elf?", click Yes.

Not turning your Wii-hacking skills into a profit engine for global domination is a very altruistic thing to do. Take a moment to be thankful for all the awesome people in the world that create and distribute the free and open-source software that makes our lives better. Press 1 to continue loading the exploit.

At this point the exploit has been executed and the HackMii installer is the temporary operating system—think LiveCD—of the Wii. From this menu you can select whether or not you want to install The Homebrew Channel, DVDx, and/or BootMii—BootMii is a more advanced tool which you may or may not care to load, it's essentially a boot loader for the Wii that provides a more extensive "takeover" of the Wii than The Homebrew Channel.

On this menu you install or uninstall the respective tools. If this is your first time running the HackMii Installer you won't see the Uninstall option under any of the entries. During testing we forgot to photograph this screen and hopped back into the installer to snap it.

Install The Homebrew Channel? Yes, Ma'am.

After you agree to install the The Homebrew Channel it usually installs in a matter of seconds. Far faster than we were able to raise the camera to snap a picture. You'll see the SUCCESS in cash-money-green when it is done installing. You can repeat the installation process for DVDx and BootMii if you desire.

After The Homebrew Channel finishes installing you'll be taken to the channel itself. The Homebrew Channel runs applications out of the /YourSD Card/Apps/ folder. During this screenshot our SD card was empty, thus the expansive bubbly-goodness of the default Homebrew screen.
