Kinect Makes Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller Free part2

Target, says that Xbox 360 is one of their bestsellers. Nik Naya, vice president, merchandising at Target says, “We expect Kinect will be a must-have gift this holiday season, so Target will continue to receive consistent shipments of Kinect throughout December. The hands-free, active gaming experience that Kinect offers is something that everyone in the family can enjoy.”

There are over 60 000 retailers in 38 countries selling Kinect and Xbox 360.

Kinect is an add-on to the Xbox 360. Without Kinect, a user can still play games on Xbox 360. This means users do not need to buy a new console when updating to Kinect. The audio and imaging A1 of the Kinect recognises faces and recognises a player from others around him or her. Kinect also has speech recognition and can track up to 6 players at a time.

The general manager of Xbox Live, Mark Whitten, said in an interview. “How people are going to consume entertainment is changing in this amazing time we are in. When you look at Xbox 360 and what we have with Live, and the power to bring in Kinect, which gives you this natural user interface to drive on top of that, that’s what’s going to be really special–whether that’s about all the games you can play or the new user entertainment experiences. It’s really about how you get people to expect more out of their living room.”

Kinect Makes Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller Free part1

The Kinect, for Xbox 360, is an outstanding success for Microsoft (NASDAQ: MFST). Xbox 360 is a home entertainment and video system. It provides an enormous range of video games as well as a huge on demand library of music and movies. The movies are standard and high definition versions. The box also shows TV shows and digital games. There are 25 million Xbox LIVE members.

Around 2.5 million copies of Kinect were sold in the first ten days after its release in November 2010. Its great appeal is it does not need a controller. It is the only controller-free games and entertainment system available. The user controls, games, music and television with their gestures and voice.

“We are thrilled about the consumer response to Kinect, and are working hard with our retail and manufacturing partners to expedite production and shipments of Kinect to restock shelves as fast as possible to keep up with demand,” said Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. “With sales already exceeding two and a half million units in just 25 days, we are on pace to reach our forecast of 5 million units sold to consumers this holiday.”

It has been revealed on the official Koei Warriors website that the seventh installment in the franchise is now under development for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Dubbed Dynasty Warriors 7, this iteration has been scheduled for a 2011 release in the gaming arena.

iPad 2 case gets hands-on, supports iPod touch-inspired back

The second generation iPad's design details may have been confirmed on Monday through the first known instance of a hands-on with a pre-release case (video below). Coming from the same outlet that described design details, the look compared the new ipad case to an original iPad and noted that the new frame was, as claimed, much more like that of the 2010 iPod touch. It showed the larger back speaker and a camera hole just large enough to match that of the iPhone 4's, albeit without flash.

Unusually, the ipad case has a significant cutout along the top edge. The space could contain the flash but may also be to leave the 3G antenna space exposed. Such cases have room for inaccuracies but are usually based on pre-production design specs leaked out in advance to small case manufacturers, many of whom are often located near factories in southern China.

If reflective of the final model, the case would point to Apple following a similar strategy with the iPad that it did with the iPhone, where the second edition was a major redesign with significant feature changes. Most expect it to now have dual cameras, a faster dual-core processor and possibly a higher resolution display. Any ipad cases may have come very early as the new iPad might not ship until April.

Purported iPad 2 case diagrams depict altered design

Case mold drawings obtained from an Asian supplier hint at the design features of the second-generation iPad, claims 9to5Mac. The diagrams appear to support notions that the new device will use tapered edges, similar to those on the iPod touch; the model should continue to use a contoured back though, as opposed to a flat one. More significantly, a cutout section shows space for a rear camera roughly the size of the iPhone 4's.

Because of the nature of the ipad case, there is no hint one way or another of a front-facing camera. Also a mystery is a new opening on the left-hand side of the hardware. The space is believed to be reserved for an SD card slot, a mini USB port and/or a full-sized USB connection. Peripheral support has been a common complaint about the first-generation iPad, since tasks as simple as importing photos from a camera require a special adapter and access to the tablet's lone dock connector.

Rumors from Foxconn sources additionally suggest that the second-gen model may be only 8.5mm thick. It's unknown however whether the measurement was done from the edge or the center; if at the center, the product would be thinner than the original iPad's 13.4mm. Such a change could alleviate weight problems which make an iPad difficult to hold single-handed for a long stretch of time.

PS3 may have received possible permanent jailbreak

PlayStation 3 firmware unlocks like PS Jailbreak may have a permanent way to circumvent Sony's patching attempts. Hacking team Fail 0verflow used the Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin on Wednesday to show a technique that could not only crack the PS3's loaders but allow for self-signatures to give apps permission to run. They would not only allow hacks that run without needing a USB stick but to quickly update signatures on unofficial code when a Sony patch tries to render the signings invalid.

The update could immediately render Sony's 3.55 firmware susceptible and might make it difficult for the company to sustain a lockdown for more than a matter of hours.

Sony hasn't commented on the new discovery. Jailbreaking didn't occur on the platform until the company removed Linux support from the PS3 with its 3.21 upgrade. The company has routinely claimed that it pulled support due to security reasons, but it's widely believed the primary incentive was to curb piracy. Many earlier piracy attempts used Linux to access the PS3 firmware and app code without the restrictions that would normally be in place.

iPad 2 rumored to sport smaller bezel, flat back, and wide-range speakers

The iPad is a raging success, and while competitors are looking to keep up with what Apple released nearly a year ago, Apple is already plotting the second iteration of its immensely popular tablet.

While some rumored and upcoming have already been discussed ad nauseum (dual cameras, retina display), last week brought with it some brand new iPad rumors ready for dissection.

In a story first reported on the Japanese Apple blog Mac Octakara, an anonymous Chinese source relays that the iPad 2 will sport the same 9.7-inch screen but will come equipped with a smaller bezel. More specifically, the dimensions of the iPad 2 are rumored to measure 239 mm by 186 mm. By way of comparison, the current iPad measures in at 242.8 mm by 189.7 mm.

Another rumored add-on to the next generation iPad is the inclusion of a wide range speaker and a completely flat back, similar in design to the most recent iteration of the iPod Touch.

Interestingly enough, hot on the heels of that report came a report from Electronista detailing a listing for iPad 2 case which includes a spot on the bottom for the aforementioned speaker. Indeed, previously leaked case designs for the iPad 2 have included a space towards the bottom.

Now as for a release date for the iPad 2, that's still up in the air. Many believe Steve Jobs and company will announce a new iPad sometime in January, but it remains to be seen if Apple will wait again until April to finally release it.

What to do when data is Lost after backing up HDD?

Q: I got a new PS3 for christmas, a slimline PS3 with FW3.41. Since I didn't need my phat anymore, I used the backup utility to back up the PS3 HDD. I then formatted the phat, and gave it to my cousin.

I tried restoring the backup, but it gave an error message. "This data is from another PS3. Backup utility will only be able to restore certain files." It didn't restore anything, not even saves.

Is there any way to get over the different PS3 restriction, or manipulate the data otherwise to get files from it?

A: jailbreak your slim, install gaia and connect your other hdd to a linux based system. because in some cases the ps3 even formats external hdds as ext (rare case but happens from time to time) which means you'd lose your data while connecting to a windows OS. anyways connect gaia with an ftp manager and just copy the folders into the belonging folders of your ps3.

after that connect it to the ps3 again and try to start the recovery system once more, it doesn't matter if it fails, but instead it should be working now!

How To Upgrade Your PS3 Hard Drive

It doesn't matter if you have the 20GB, 60GB, 80GB or even the newer PlayStation 3 Slims--you can always use more storage space. All that available harddisk space quickly disappears once you start downloading games, demos, and HD videos. Fortunately, Sony has designed the PS3 to allow console owners to perform their own hard drive upgrades. You can go out and select your own PS3 hard disk instead of being forced to buy an official first-party harddisk accessory. However, giving console owners that freedom means aspiring upgraders will need to know how to select the right hard drive upgrade and the proper installation technique.

new-optional-HDD-Game Accessories

Harddisk manufacturer Seagate supplied us with a 160GB Momentus 5400.3 for our upgrade.

The first step to replacing the harddisk is going to the store or visiting an online retailer to pick up a new harddisk. The PS3 is compatible with just about any 2.5-inch SATA notebook harddisk. The physical size of the harddisk is important because it has to fit the PS3's 2.5-inch drive tray. As far as storage capacity goes, it doesn't make sense to go through the trouble of upgrading unless you go big: We're talking 120GB, 160GB, or even 250GB.、

Once you have your upgrade drive, the next step is to backup the data on your current PS3 hard drive to an external storage unit. You can skip this step if you aren't attached to your music, videos, and game saves, but most of us will probably want to save all that information. The PS3 has a built-in software backup utility that can copy the PS3's hard drive contents to an external storage device, such as a USB thumb drive or a Memory Stick. The removable storage device must use the FAT32 file system in order for the PS3 to recognize it. If you have an external hard drive that's formatted in NTFS, you can use the Disk Management utility in Windows to reformat the drive, but you'll need to create partitions on large external hard drives because Windows can do only FAT32 on drives 32GB or smaller.

new-optional-HDD-Game Accessories

Save your data using the PS3's backup utility.

If your storage device isn't large enough to handle a full system backup, you can selectively copy data over through the various music, photo, and game menus in the XMB. Your PlayStation Network login and system settings will remain safe on the system during the entire process. After you have your data safely backed up, you can move on to the actual hard drive swap.

You will need a Phillips-head screwdriver to complete this part of the installation process. The PS3 owner's manual also includes step-by-step details on how to replace the hard drive, in case you need more instructions.

new-optional-HDD-Game Accessories

Turn off and unplug the system. Remove the plastic HD side panel, and remove the blue screw.

new-optional-HDD-Game Accessories

Open the metal latch, move the drive tray to the right, and slide out the drive.

new-optional-HDD-Game Accessories

Remove the four screws that hold the hard drive to the tray. Use a screwdriver that fits snugly because the screws are extremely tight and easy to strip.

new-optional-HDD-Game Accessories

Swap in the new drive, and replace the screws.

new-optional-HDD-Game Accessories

Put the drive tray back into the system and slide it into place. Then replace the blue screw and snap the side panel back onto the system.

new-optional-HDD-Game Accessories

Turn on the console and let the system format the new drive. Then load up the PS3 backup utility to restore data from your external storage device back onto the PS3 hard drive.

At this point you should have a newly upgraded PS3 and the leftover hard drive. You could try selling the old drive, but small-capacity used drives may not fetch enough money to be worth the hassle of finding a buyer. If you still want to make the drive useful, you can buy an external drive enclosure to make it into a portable storage device.

Touchless technology like Kinect is Coming to iPad

With Microsoft’s Kinect system now in place it comes as no surprise that other manufacturers would try and clone similar technology into their own systems, but we had no idea it would be Apple’s iPad!

It seems that a Norwegian company called Elliptic Labs is set demonstrate its new touchless gesture user interface for the iPad at CES 2011. To achieve the gesture control the interface is said to harness ultrasound to generate a field that will project at least one foot in front or to the side of a docked iPad. Users can then wave their hands about in front of the screen to control the device.

MacRumours managed to speak with the CEO of this company (Stian Aldrin) who explained the reasonings behind the tech:
The idea is that you use touchless gestures to operate primary functions of a docked tablet in situations like when you have wet or greasy hands in the kitchen. In general tablets are made for being handheld. When it is docked you are often walking or standing further away, and then using a finger on the screen involves a change of modality. Rather than bending down, leaning forward or picking it up you can use larger movements a little bit further away to do things like volume up or next song without changing modality.

Personally I love the whole concept of the Kinect and it’s good to see that other companies are embracing the technology in new ways. Apple has also expressed its own interest in Kinect-like gestures and voice control, so we may see new products emerging from the corporate giant in the not too distant future.

Kinect is coming to PC

Microsoft's popular Kinect, the controller-free motion sensing accessory for the Xbox 360, could be coming to the PC, according to a slip of the tongue by a Korean games developer.

The USB-connected peripheral allows the Xbox 360 to record video and sense depth, giving the console a stream of data that can be interpreted in 3D space to track the movements of a player. Unlike rival motion control systems such as the Nintendo Wiimote and Sony's Move, Kinect doesn't require any controller at all - in fact, Microsoft's marketing suggests that the player is the controller.

While we were impressed with the potential of Kinect when we reviewed it last month, the poor selection of launch titles was a disappointment - but if Microsoft is planning to open the controller to the PC gaming world, we could see some rapid innovation on that front.

Although Microsoft has yet to comment on the rumour, Korean-based GamePrix explained to gaming site IncGamers that "Kinect will soon be available as a new controller [on the PC]." GamePrix is so sure that Microsoft is planning a PC release of Kinect, which it claims has developers queuing up to support, it's planning to add the device as a control option in its latest multiplayer online role playing game, Divine Soul, with a combat mode that takes full advantage of the Kinect's capabilities.

Whether the Kinect, which relies on having a large amount of clear space between the sensor and the player, will translate well to the PC remains to be seen.

Random Tips to Get Your kinect Started

I’m not going to go into detail about getting started with your Xbox 360 with Kinect; I assume the majority of you already have an Xbox 360 or have played with one prior to this purchase. If you haven’t played with one before, bring someone who owns one to help you set it up and explain the cool things it can do.

Instead, I’d like to leave you with a few random tips and pieces of advice when you’re setting up a Kinect-enabled Xbox:

• Xbox Live is well worth a subscription price. It’s how you get the downloadable content and, more importantly, it’s necessary for multi-player. The nice thing about the new Xbox 360 is that it is Wi-Fi enabled; I have to stick an Ethernet cable into my older model to get an Internet connection.

• Netflix streaming is a must. It changes the entire Xbox 360 experience for the better.

• The Xbox 360 is an entertainment station just as much as it is a gaming console. Link it up with your computers to play the music and movies you have stored. I personally have a 1TB wireless external hard drive where I store most of my movies, TV shows and music. Since both the Xbox 360 and the drive are linked to the same router, I’m able to play that multimedia on my television without any hassle. Definitely set up something similar if you have a digital collection.

• The Xbox 360 comes with iPod support via an optional support update. Download it from the marketplace if you’d like to enhance your TV’s entertainment potential.

• It’s really, really important to have the right space for the Kinect. You need the space not just for the sensors to pick you up, but for your friends to sit on the sidelines to cheer you on. Having couches to the side or well behind the range of the Kinect is ideal. Microsoft recommends having eight feet of space from the sensor to the player for any two-player game, but you can get away with an extra foot if it’s necessary. The key is not to let the space feel cramped.

Kinect Adventure : Certainly Get the cheapest and nicest!

Kinect brings games and entertainment to life in extraordinary newways – no controller required. Easy to use and instantly fun, Kinect gets everyone off the couch moving, laughing and cheering. See a ball? Kickit. Control an HD movie with a wave of the hand. Want to join a friend in the fun? Simply jump in. With Kinect technology evaporates, letting the natural magic in all of us shine. And the best part is Kinect works with every Xbox 360 right out of the box.

Good Science Studio, formerly code-named “Spawnpoint,” is a Microsoft Game Studio game development studio founded in 2009 by a combination of industry veterans and creative newcomers. “Kinect Adventures” is the first title from Good Science.

Float in outer space. Experience the thrill of roaring rapids. Tackle mountain top obstacle courses. And dive into the deep to explore a leaky underwater observatory — all from your living room. Kinect-Like Gesture Technology for iPad To Be Shown Off at CES 2011

Touch-screen devices are steadily taking over the world, but one Norwegian tech company is already trying to move us into a future touch-free interfaces. Elliptic Labs will be at CES 2011 to show off its latest creation – a dock attachment that will enable a whole new way to interact with an iPad using gestures made just above the screen’s surface.

New Scientist ponders what this kind of tech might be used for :

Imagine you’re reading a cake recipe onscreen and you don’t want to getflour or butter on your £500 gadget: simply sweeping your hand in front of the screen will allow you to turn to the next page. Ditto engine oil/axle grease covered hands when you’re reading a motorbike manual. Clearly, applications in sign language beckon, too – and gaming of course.

Hardware-wise, the whole bag of magic works by using ultrasound signals and measuring the time it takes for them to be returned by your hand. This method of tracking movement makes the system a cheaper alternative to the infra red one used by hardware like Microsoft’s Kinect. Cheap is good!

Thrustmaster Details Its Super Pricey GT5 Controller

PS3-DualShock-3-Wireless-Controller-Game Accessories

Earlier this month, it was reavealed that Thrustmaster was working on a ps3 controller for Gran Turismo 5 on the PS3. Aside from the basics about the steering wheel, not a whole lot was known at the time. Now, however, Thurstmaster has unveiled a lot more information about the device, including a release date, definite specs, and a price point.

The T500RS wheel and pedal set is specifically optimized for Gran Turismo 5, and the pedals are entirely made from medal. The wheel, meanwhile, is pretty insane in its own right. It features 1080 rotation (meaning you can spin it three times),16-bit resolution, and 65,536 values in its steering axis. The set also includes a textured metal foot rest. While it's not included with the set right now, there will be a gear stick available for purchase later on.

It sounds like Polyphony Digital's boss, Kazunori Yamauchi, is pretty happy with the rig: "The goal that I set for the Thrustmaster team was to design for me the most precise wheel ever developed, without any latency - to accurately reproduce the sensations of GT5, and let users truly feel the emotions experienced by drivers on real racing circuits."

The T500 RS is going to launch in Europe in North America on January 5th and Japan on the 25th.I'm one of those guys who's fine playing a racing game with a standard PS3 game controller, but it sounds like this is the device to play Gran Turismo 5 with, provided you're a racing junkie and your wallet can afford that kind of a hit.

PS3 Patch Day: GT5 Damage, Console Security

It's a PlayStation 3 Patching Double Whammy today, as Sony has unleashed updates for both Gran Turismo 5 and the console that you hopefully have set aside to actually run the thing.

For the racing fans out there, the good news. GT5's patch comes complete with mechanical damage so you can tear away and trash those cars to your heart's delight. The update covers both single-player and online modes, with the option to choose how heavy your damage can become when playing on PSN.

The patch is a 150MB download though, so make some tea. You're going to need the new PS3 firmware update in order to take advantage of the lovely smashing action, though.

The PlayStation 3 firmware update is decidedly more boring, merely adding 'more security' measures to your console. Which could easily be translated as 'knocking out more piracy devices.' Hope you didn't get Jimmy that PS.Jailbreak for Christmas

iPad Portable Keyboard becomes fashion gift idea of Christmas

The iPad virtual keyboard is plenty for most users, but some wordsmiths need the power of a physical keyboard for when they’re using their iPad for heavy duty writing. And because those moments sometimes come while on the road, portability becomes paramount. As such, various vendors have gotten the idea to build a physical keyboard into the interior of an iPad case. And of the various options out there, the ZAGGmate with iPad Keyboard (from ZAGG, the Invisible Shield people) is your winner.

It’s a metal hardshell which snaps onto your iPad for protection and then snaps off to reveal a ipad keyboard inside. And unlike many of its competitors, the ZAGGmate allows you to use your iPad in either portrait or landscape mode when typing.

The iPad keyboard market is still very early in its development, and we look forward to seeing what ZAGG and others have up their sleeve in that regard in 2011. But as of now, this is the option you’re most likely to be pleased with. As such, the ZAGGmate with Keyboard is Beatweek’s 2010 iPad Portable Keyboard of the Year.

PS3 on track for best year yet

Sony expects that by the time its fiscal year wraps up on March 31, 2011, it will have sold 15 million PS3 systems over the past 365 days. That would be more than any year before.

Unlike the Wii and Xbox 360, which sold very well in the beginning and are working to encourage new sales, the PS3 started off slowly and may be finally picking up steam.

Sony executive VP Kaz Hirai thanked the PS3 Move motion controller for boosting sales in the last few months of the 2010 calendar year. The company has previously claimed to have sold 2.5 million Moves ahead of the holiday shopping rush.
"Sales at the end of the year are as we expected," said Hirai in a recent discussion.

Sony's "10 year plan" may be working out after all. It just took four years to get in motion.

A Christmas gift guide to father-and-son gaming part2

5. Donkey Kong Country Returns (Rated E, Wii): While Super Mario Galaxy 2 received some of the highest review scores of the year, its somewhat limited cooperative play made it a lackluster hit in my house. Donkey Kong Country Returns, though, was a huge hit thanks to the ability to play as father and, perhaps, son apes. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong each have important and unique abilities that help the duo get through the dangerous levels. Playing the game forces parent and child teams to work together to survive.

4. Kirby’s Epic Yarn (Rated E, Wii): This has got to be the cutest game of not just 2010, but the decade. Players control yarn versions of already adorable Kirby and Prince Fluff. The entire game takes place in a world of yarn, stitching and buttons. Players need to hop and yarn-attack their way through the world trying to defeat the evil wizard Yin-Yarn. This is one of the only games I’ve ever called my wife down to look at. She was so enchanted by the aesthetic that she stayed to watch us play.

3. Dance Central (Rated T, Xbox 360, Kinect): Dance Central does what no wedding reception, New Year’s Eve party or family gathering has ever succeeded at doing: It gets your child to want to dance with you. Well, dance against you. Using Microsoft’s motion-sensing Kinect camera, players follow the on-screen characters to dance their way through popular choreographed songs. Most importantly, though, you can have dance battles with your child, proving once and for all who the king of the robot is.

2. LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (Rated E10, PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii): Tristan and I have played through every one of Traveller’s Tales LEGO-themed video games, starting with their enormously popular LEGO Star Wars in 2005. With the release of Harry Potter both my son and I were thinking we were done with the LEGO games, but the developer managed to add enough improvements to the idea to make this latest title the best in its library. You and your child take on the role of Harry Potter and his friends as they make their way through the first four Harry Potter books and movies.

1. Toy Story 3 (Rated E10, Mac, PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii): Video games based on movies, much like movies based on video games, are often horrible. They’re so bad, that I rarely spend the time to play them. But my 9-year-old son still believes in their potential. So when he first asked, then begged me to play Toy Story 3 with him, I finally gave in. Toy Story 3, which includes both a short campaign and a toy box world to explore, ended up being the game we played most this year. Why? Because of that marvelous toy box mode which allows you to create your own adventures, your own stories and challenges on the fly. Players can take on the role of some of the movie’s mainstays, race, throw balls at each other and hunt for hidden treasures. The open-endedness of the game combined with my son’s own sense of imagination had us playing and laughing together for hours at a time.

A Christmas gift guide to father-and-son gaming part1

Video games aren’t just a wonderful present for children, they’re also a wonderful opportunity to bond.

Playing side-by-side with your son or daughter gives you a chance to interact in ways typically off-limits to parents. You can see you child lead, make decisions, problem solve and team up together to defeat the bad guys. It’s also, I’ve found, a lot of fun.

Here’s a rundown of the 10 games my 9-year-old son and I played most together this year. Everyone has their own parenting styles, so make sure you research the games before you give any of these a try.

10. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (Rated Teen, PC, PS3, Xbox 360): This action-adventure title turns the classic franchise into a top-down cooperative game of problem solving and blowing away the bad guys.

9. Minecraft (unrated, PC): While this indie mega hit is still in development, gamers can already drop in to build and play. In the game, players spend the day chipping away at the landscape to dig out homes and construct monuments and then the nights trying to survive the blocky enemies that invade. You can also set up a private server to explore and build with your child.

8. Split Second (Rated E10, PC, PS3, Xbox 360): This Disney-published racing game has players tearing around race tracks built on giant movie sets. The tracks are packed with major events like explosions, building collapses and falling overpasses, all of which can be triggered by players as they race. The split-screen cooperative mode makes it a blast to play offline with your child.

7. Toy Soldiers (Rated Teen, Xbox 360): The biggest draw for Toy Soldiers is its wonderful diorama graphics which deliver a playfield of plastic landscapes and toy soldiers. In the game, players need to defend their base from attacking German or British soldiers. A split-screen mode allows you to both play with your child at the same time.

6. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Rated E, Wii): This second adventure returns Super Mario to space in a spaceship shaped like Mario’s head. The ship travels to different galaxies, delivering a slew of levels for Mario to explore. A second player can help Mario by controlling an orange Luma which can grab enemies, attack them and shoot Star Bits.

Game on for 2011, player!

Sales may not have been quite as robust as last year, but blockbuster 3D titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops and Gran Turismo 5 still managed to keep cash registers humming.

2010 also saw the PS3 and Xbox 360 throw down the gauntlet to the market-leading Nintendo Wii in a big way. The arrival of Microsoft's ground-breaking Kinect gesture-recognition games controller and Sony's PlayStation Move have changed the game, opening up new and exciting ways to play.

With another year almost under our belt, GREG THOM looks at what's in store for 2011.

You body is the remote control with Kinect

This game computer, where the human body is the remote control, appears to be this year’s ultimate Christmas present. But what’s the really cool thing about the Kinect. RNW’s Casper Meijer has been testing it out.

Motion gaming – basically: operating a game computer with your own physical movements – is very much ‘cool’ at the moment. It’s a whole new world compared to pressing knobs and buttons and playing with joysticks. However, unlike the Wii and Play Station Move, you don’t need a control box at all with Microsoft’s Kinect.

The Kinect is an 'add-on' for the Xbox 360 games computer – so you need to already have one of them, or go out and buy one. It’s basically a sensor which is put on or under a television and which uses a camera and infra-red technology to constantly ‘read’ body position, body attitude and motion and translates these into 'instructions'for the game. The technology behind it was originally developed for the Israeli armed forces and later acquired by Microsoft.

It’s quite fantastic watching a figure on the TV screen mimicking your own movements exactly, You can also use arm movements to navigate through the Xbox menu, a little bit similar to what happens in the film Minority Report.

Playing games on the Kinect is, to begin with, also great fun, particularly so when there is a larger number of players, and maybe an audience too. No doubt, the Kinect is or will be a big hit at parties.

This is mainly due to the total novelty of the experience; the fact that most of the graphics are ‘cute’ and have a cartoon-like appearance and that, thanks to its intuitive operating system, everyone can play straightaway without further ado. But therein lies the Kinect’s basic and largest problem, because once the novelty has worn off, the games actually turn out to be rather simple and repetitive.

Knights Contract Unfolds On PS3, 360 February 22

Namco Bandai’s announced that medieval romp Knights Contract will hit PS3 and Xbox 360 on February 22.

Set on a cursed locale rife with malicious beasts, the title sees players assume the role of Heinrich, an immortal executioner, and Gretchen who is a resurrected witch. The duo embark on a quest for purification.

As you’d expect, that endeavor will involve bloodshed. Lots of it. Namco is giving players more than one way to slay foes, either by a razor sharp scythe or explosive witchcraft. You can catch a glimpse at the carnage in the gameplay video above, which depicts a battle against a serpent-like monstrosity.

XBox Kinect Builds Off of The Wii

Last year, when an in-development, motion-sensing Xbox 360 device was first presented by Microsoft in an initial preview, many people sensed that the Wii would soon be facing some tough competition when it came to motion-sensing action games. The Wii has, however, benefited from a head start in the field yet the Xbox 360 Kinect will offer some definite advantages.

While Wii motion-sensing devices have been available for purchase for a long time, the quality of Wii games is a factor to take into consideration. The Wii is just unable to compete with the graphic processing power of the Xbox 360. The Wii has never claimed to be able to compete, however. The success of the Wii is thanks to its ability to appeal to casual gamers. Furthermore, it creates excellent “party games”.

For Microsoft, this is an unfamiliar situation. The Xbox 360 games console features a wide range of outstanding games. However, the majority of these games are aimed specifically at twitch gamers, role-play game enthusiasts and more traditional video gamers. The Xbox Kinect aims to bring a brand new audience to the Xbox world. Microsoft has not been shy about imitating the Wii console in this regard. It has also removed the requirement for extra accessories such as the Wii Fit through offering a product of greater inclusivity. A brief look at a few Kinect games in production show that they build off the great success of the Wii.

The Wii Fit has been nearly cloned by the Kinect 360 Fitness Evolved game. And in contrast to the Wii, there is no requirement for additional peripherals in order to begin burning calories. Third parties companies have also began manufacturing Kinect versions of Wii classics such as the Biggest Loser and Zumba Fitness. Kinect Joy Ride is clearly meant to be an Xbox 360 clone of Mario Kart for the Wii as it not only offers similar game play but has similar features too. Even games for the Nintendo DS such as Nintendogs have an equivalent for the Xbox Kinect. It is called Kinectimals and allows gamers to look after a virtual animal.

Nintendo has never failed to be an innovator and has always brought fresh ideas to the gaming market. Sometimes they find success, other times they do not. However, in the last few years, the quality of both the graphics and processing power has lagged behind their rivals. Nintendo may have been the innovators of motion-sensor gaming but Microsoft looks set to steal the thunder. Getting onto the market before everyone else certainly holds its own advantages. However, the Wii game collection is also packed with dud games that people are not interested in playing. The amount of success Kinect achieves will depend on Kinect games\’ quality.

The Kinect benefited from a full preview at the prestigious E3 convention and it will be released this coming November. On the face of it, Microsoft looks to have covered all its bases. However, will the flashier graphics on top of similar gaming concepts prove to be enough to lure people away from the Wii and into the world of Kinect? Microsoft is certainly hoping so.

Xbox Kinect at a Glance

Introducing the new revolutionary gaming system, Kinect for Xbox 360s. Formally known as Project Natal. Eliminates the need for costly headsets and controllers. You are the controller.

Basically Kinect for Xbox 360 “sees” you in front of the gaming platform and mirrors your image and your movements. There are no controllers as you are the controller. As you move Kinect sees you and moves in the game.

Kinect for Xbox 360s is based on the web cam technology with a horizontal sensor bar that mirrors your movements. Kinect features a RGB camera, depth sensor, and a multi array microphone providing 3D motion, voice, and facial recognition capabilities.

Kinect for Xbox 360 is smarter than the basic web cam however. The web cam sees the room in an invisible infrared light. It also tracks up to 48 points of your body to show your movements on the TV screen in real time so you are part of the game. The Kinect gaming platform is on a tilt base to follow you around the room.

Kinect has the capabilities to recognize you with RGB color. It has a built in microphone so you can say a command and will do it. Say you want to watch a Netflix movie, you can either point to it or you can say Netflix and Netflix will come on.

The ability to have a video chat has been up scaled with Kinect for Xbox 360. You can now watch a video or a movie with a friend that is in another place.

Kinect for Xbox 360 is due to be released Nov 4, 2010 for the 2010 holiday season.

Accessorize Your Xbox Kinect

One of the highlights of the E3 Gaming Conference was the announcement to the world about the Microsoft Xbox Kinect, a gaming peripheral for the Xbox that is capable of capturing the movement of the player and eliminating the use of a game controller. The rave for this product made it one of the most famous pre ordered product in the console gaming industry to date. There are already Kinect video games to match up with the Kinect technology. Whether you have the Kinect console for Xbox or the Kinect for Xbox 360, the fun is sure to be never ending with friends and family with this new way of gaming experience.

With great consoles come great accessories to add up to the gaming experience. There are a number of companies who are now producing Xbox Kinect accessories; the most popular of them is called Mad Catz. Here is a list of the existing game accessories that every Kinect owner must have:

Mad Catz Flat Panel Mounting Bracket – For flat panel TV owners, this accessory is essential for you. It is fashioned out to be compatible to almost all the flat panel TV. It mounts the Xbox Kinect camera on the top or the bottom of your television set. The camera will be mounted with a metal contraption to give a steady hold to the camera.

Mad Catz Base Adapter – For users who are concerned with space then this accessory is what you need. It supports a universal tripod perfectly so that you can move it farther from you if you need more space to do your moves.

Mad Catz Floor Stand – If you do not have mounting devices at hand then this accessory will sooth your worries. The floor stand is supported by a very sturdy base and on its center is a mounting pole of about 2 and a half feet in height. The Kinect camera can be connected to the mounting pole with ease. This accessory can be placed near the TV with little worry on the space it consumes.

Total gaming experience can be achieved with the right game accessories at hand. A little investment won’t hurt as most of the accessories are made to last. The Kinect games will surely go a long way, as months pass more and more Kinect video games and other software will come out as part of the evolution of Kinect technology, each with a different experience, yet each with the same goal which is the total gaming experience.

The Technology Behind The Xbox Kinect

The Microsoft Xbox Kinect has been making waves ever since it was in the project stage. It was earlier known as Project Natal, and has come far from the prototype stage and is all set to overpower living rooms everywhere. The Kinect is an amazing piece of technology that can do many, many things; but what’s really happening behind the scenes? Read on to find out.

The core of Kinect’s functionality is motion detection. It is one of the most advanced commercially available motion detection systems ever manufactured keeping mass distribution in mind. It comprises of 3 cameras, which are in fact RGB cameras serving as depth sensors as well.

The Depth sensor is in the form of an infrared projector, that when combined with the precise senor allows Kinect to “see” 3D images. The software behind Kinect is quite ingenious, and allows it to be calibrated according to any needs imaginable, thus ensuring that Kinect will work in almost any scenarios.

For instance, since Kinect is a piece of motion detection software, barriers such as furniture can often be a problem; but since it is designed to be a neat, seamless part of your living room, it wouldn’t make sense to have to move your furniture out of the way. So the Xbox Kinect software that Microsoft coded can adjust itself accordingly.

Though the hardware of Xbox Kinect is quite impressive, it’s the software that really sets it apart. Not only is it capable of picking up on 3D objects, Microsoft built in state of the art gesture, facial and voice recognition. What’s even more impressive is that it can do all this for up to six people at the same time. With so many features and an impressive games list to boot, Kinect looks all set to become the future of gaming, and is bound to revolutionize human interaction as we know it.

How To Install Kinect To Your TV After Buying Kinect

If you have made the decision to get a Microsoft Kinect, it is congratulations. Whether you buy a Kinect online or in a store, this addition to your Xbox will add a new dimension to your game playing experiences. Many consumers have made the decision to buy Kinect, because it is the first gaming unit that allows a user to interact with various games without using a controller. The user communicates to the unit through the use of body movement, voice commands, and other objects. Despite the complex technology it incorporates, installing Kinect to your television is a simple process.

After you buy Kinect, you will simply need to connect the Kinect sensor to your Xbox 360 in order to allow the fun to begin. To buy Kinect online is to open yourself to a new world of possibilities. The first step in setup is to unplug the USB cord from the back of your Xbox 360. The wireless network adaptor should be left alone and left attached to the console. The second step of the process will be to plug the Wi-Fi USB extension cable to the wireless network adaptor.

Next, you should open the small, oval door on the front of your 360 to expose the USB ports. The open end of the USB extension cable should be plugged into one of the two USB ports. The other end should be plugged into the network adaptor. After you buy Kinect in a store or buy Kinect online, you will need to locate the power cord. One end of the cord will plug into the Kinect unit, and the USB prong should be connected into the USB port on the back of the Xbox. A solid, green light on the Kinect display should be displayed if it has been connected correctly.

The final step to setup after you buy Kinect is to update the console software. You should insert the disc that is labeled “Kinect Adventures”. Using the Xbox controllers, you should position the mouse to select “My Xbox” and then “Kinect Adventures”. If the software must be updated, the Xbox will prompt you to do so. It may also be necessary to calibrate the Kinect itself. If not, then you are ready to enjoy your new toy.

Kinect Reviews Making You Think Your Living Room Is Too Small? Relax!

Many recent Kinect reviews raised a few common concerns about the conditions required to play Kinect. They include the distance players must stand away from the Kinect sensor. The need for a clean room. And the need to stand to play.

Based on a leaked copy of the Kinect manual, it appears Microsoft is recommending users stand 6 to 8 feet away from the Kinect sensor. This seems to have caught many off guard. And many feel it is unreasonable. The average person doesn’t have that kind of room available.

The good news is it turns out Kinect works just fine with players as close as 5 feet away. The reviews raising the red flag are referring to the recommendation, not actual hands on experience. The 6 to 8 feet appears to just be what Microsoft is suggesting as the optimal setup. It isn’t a prerequisite.

Also, trying to play Kinect in less than 5 feet of space is most likely a safety hazard. Playing Kinect games involves using your entire body. But your focus is squarely on your TV screen. If you are in less space and are flailing away with your arms and legs, you are going to hit something or someone inadvertently. Player safety and their liability probably explains Microsoft’s 6 to 8 foot recommendation in the Kinect manual more than any technical limitation of the Kinect sensor itself.

Also, Kinect is a social gaming experience. More than any other platform it is going to emphasize multi-player games. So you are going to need room for each player to move around and for players watching. A room with less than 5 feet of game play space is probably not going to cut it.

Another common and related issue raised in recent reviews is the need to clean your floor to play. But to me this is a non-issue. Obviously, from a safety point of view Microsoft is going to recommend you clean up your floor before jumping around playing Kinect. But it turns out there is also a technical reason. When Kinect first starts up, it tilts down to the floor to find the floor plane. It relies on the floor plane as a point of reference for skeleton tracking. So a clean floor allows the most accurate tracking. But, the Kinect sensor is very intelligent and will still work if you have a messy floor. It just won’t work optimally.

Shortly after the E3 show when Kinect was announced, people began to realize players were always standing in every Kinect demo. And Microsoft had to admit that yes, you had to stand to play Kinect. But, when it became clear it was a concern, Microsoft got to work. Kinect got a software update and now it can track seated players. So far all the announced games require players to stand. But now game developers have the option to develop games for seated players.

Overall, these are all modest issues. The distance requirement could well be an issue in European and Asian countries with smaller average living spaces. But on the whole, it shouldn’t discourage interested gamers. Tidying up the floor to play is actually a reasonable requirement. And with Kinect tracking seated players, the standing issue is resolved. All in all, Microsoft must be feeling pretty good about Kinect with these among the main issues raised with Kinect to date.

Microsoft Says No To Interactive Sex-Themed Kinect Game for Xbox 360

As adult entertainment company ThriXXX announces that they have hacked the Microsoft Xbox 360 Kinect motion tracking device, Microsoft has responded strongly with not just no, but hell no.

They have stated in no uncertain terms that they are not interested in allowing a game of this nature on their system. Microsoft has never certified AO (adults only) content for use on their Xbox 360, or any other gaming system platform.

Parents will be relieved to know that Microsoft is not interested in breaking away from their family friendly platform to include AO games or any other type of interactive or virtual sexual fantasy games using the Kinect, or any other Xbox or Xbox 360 console. We’re fairly certain that they are also not pleased with the negative association to the ThriXXX brand of entertainment that they have been tied to with the announcement of the game’s potential.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Kinect device was created to enhance family friendly gaming, and that it has!! Interactive gaming has been taken to a whole new level with controller free motion gaming that allows players to actually be the controller, and to become completely immersed in the Kinect games, none of which include any sexual themes we might add!! Using advanced motion sensor technology, as well as sophisticated voice and facial recognition software, the Kinect takes your interactive gaming to a whole new level. The Xbox 360 Kinect currently has 17 Kinect compatible games that are receiving very high marks from consumers.

The Xbox 360 has been the number one selling video gaming system for six months strait, and its innovative, exciting advancements like the Kinect that keep them in the forefront of the gaming industry. The Kinect motion sensor accessory for the Xbox 360 sold over a million units in its first week on the market!!

Xbox 360 owners get more Black Ops via 'First Strike' DLC pack

BlackOps-Game Accessories

Great news for Call of Duty fans keen to extend their trigger-happy association with gaming’s juggernaut first-person franchise—publisher Activision has confirmed it will soon be offering up a fresh burst of downloadable content (DLC) for Black Ops.

Already the quickest-selling entrant in the Call of Duty franchise, the Cold War action of Black Ops is set to increase its exposure yet further when the ‘First Strike’ pack arrives on February 1 of 2011. Attached to a price of $15 USD, First Strike will offer up four multiplayer maps and a single zombie mode map.

Two regular maps will be set across existing Black Ops locations Hong Kong and Arctic Circle, while the other two will be brand new—with one set around the Berlin Wall, the other in an ice hockey stadium. There’s no word yet on the zombie map.

While the prospect of more Black Ops will undoubtedly thrill series fans everywhere, only Xbox 360 owners will be enjoying First Strike upon release due to a timed exclusivity deal existing between Microsoft and publisher Activision.

Activision has not said when the content pack will be coming to PlayStation 3 and PC. That being said, prior release history would suggest rival platform owners will probably have to wait around a month.

The announcement of First Strike comes after Black Ops officially held off the challenge of FIFA 11 and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit to become festive number one in the UK, where the game has sold three million copies since release.

If you want to buy the Xbox 360 accessories, you can go to fyygame.com. There are many game accessories for you to choose, such as Wii, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360 and PS3.

Nintendo 3DS dares to compete with Xbox 360

Nintendo 3DS-Game Accessories

Nintendo’s upcoming 3DS is already whipping up considerable interest in the handheld gaming market thanks to its glasses-free 3D technology, dual 3D cameras, and support for 3D movie playback.

However, clearly not content with competing against Sony’s PlayStation Portable, the 3DS is now even daring to puff out its tiny chest at larger, more powerful gaming platforms.

Japanese reports translated and posted by videogame blog Kotaku have revealed that the 3DS will boast game cartridges able to store an impressive 8GBs of data, which equals the disc capacity attributed to Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

Of course, the quality of Nintendo’s 3DS titles are hardly likely to rival those on Microsoft’s home console, but the portable device’s cartridge format does mean significantly faster access speeds when compared to disc-based media.

In terms of improvement over existing DS cartridges, 3DS games will apparently range between 1GB and 8GBs in size—certainly a major step up compared to the previous data ceiling of just 512MBs (or just half a gigabyte).

According to the leaked information, which emanates from Taiwan-based 3DS cartridge manufacturer Macronix, Nintendo has reportedly implemented an initial data ceiling of 2GBs.

The Nintendo 3DS will make its international debut in Japan on February 26 at a price of 25,000 Yen (approx. $300 USD).

Nintendo has not yet said when the new console will hit retail outlets in North America and Europe, although March 2011 is widely accepted as the most likely launch window.

The gaming giant is also remaining tight-lipped regarding 3DS prices outside of Japan. Curent projections suggest it will cost around $250 USD in the United States.

Nintendo DS Lite Features

The DS Lite is a portable, hand-held video game console produced by Nintendo. The system, which can play Nintendo DS game cards and Nintendo Game Boy Advance cartridges, was released in 2006 as the successor to the original Nintendo DS. The DS Lite is smaller than the DS, and has a longer-lasting battery--up to 19 hours of continuous gameplay on a full charge, according to Nintendo. It also has larger, brighter display screens.

Touch Screen Gaming

The DS Lite, which comes packaged with a compatible stylus, features a touch-sensitive LCD display screen that can be used in certain games to control characters or game actions, or to input data, text or drawings.

Game Boy Advance Compatibility

The DS Lite is capable of playing Game Boy Advance (GBA) game cartridges, a feature that its successors, the Nintendo DSi and the Nintendo 3DS, lack. In addition to providing consumers with increased game choices and flexibility, the DS Lite's ability to play GBA games enables some limited instances of cross-platform compatibility. For example, DS Lite users can migrate their collected Pokémon from a "Pokémon: Emerald" Game Boy Advance cartridge to a "Pokémon: Platinum" DS card.

Multiplayer Compatibility

The DS Lite is compatible with local wireless networks, which means that owners of DS Lite consoles can link their systems together for multiplayer gaming, regardless of whether an active Internet connection is available. Up to 16 players can play together at a range of up to 100 feet. Some DS games offer "download play," which enables linked consoles to partake in multiplayer gaming even if only one of the console owners physically possesses a particular game card.

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection

In addition to wireless play, the DS Lite is able to utilize the Nintendo Wi-Fi Network. DS Lite owners can play Wi-Fi compatible games with their friends over an active Internet connection, as well as download updates and add-ons for certain games.

Microphone

The DS Lite has a built-in microphone that can be used to enter voice commands into certain games.

Picto Chat is a software feature that is built into the DS Lite. It allows console users to exchange messages, including drawings created with the stylus, with up to 16 concurrent DS Lite users who are within the console's wireless range.

What Game Accessories Do I Need for a Nintendo DS?

Nintendo DS is the dual screen, touch pad mobile gaming system. Whether you bought the DS new or old, there are certain game accessories that you need both to play games and keep the DS functioning. These game accessories should have come with the DS if purchased new, and if you got an old one you should get these accessories as soon as possible.

AC Adapter
The mobile systems of old used batteries (usually AA or AAA) to keep the system charged. However, the Nintendo DS has a pre-installed battery that stays alive due to a charger. Without a charger, whenever the battery runs out, your DS will stay dead until charged.

There are different adapters for different models. The original DS, DS Lite and DSi (which includes the DSi XL) must have a specific AC adapter, or charging will not occur properly. Using the wrong adapter may even damage your system.

Internal Battery
Though rare, the battery in your Nintendo DS can die due to problems or overuse. Or, if you purchased an old DS, it may not have come with a battery. Like the charger, the battery is needed to supply power to the DS. Without the battery, though, the DS will never turn on.

When purchasing a battery, get one for your specific DS system, or the battery will not connect and give the DS power.

Stylus
The DS stylus is the little (or in the case of the DSi XL, large) plastic pen that is used on the Nintendo DS touch screen. The touch screen records the stylus' movement and translates it into the game.

While a stylus is not technically required--you could use your finger or another object (like a real pen) to emulate the same function--it is recommended. Using anything other than an official Nintendo stylus can damage the screen.

There are different sized styluses for different DS models, but unlike the other accessories, you can mix and match these.

Plastic Covers
There are two covers on all DS models--a battery cover and a cartridge cover. While both of these are not necessarily needed, they keep dust away from the inside of the DS (extending its overall life) and keep you from touching the batteries (which prevents accidental shock or exposure to battery acid if a battery bursts).

Cool Things to Do With a Nintendo DS Lite

The Nintendo DS Lite features a number of best-selling games such as "Mario Kart DS," "Pokemon" titles and "Nintendogs." While most players use the hand-held system primarily to enjoy games, the DS Lite also offers other functions, from wireless Internet chatting to keeping track of time. Most functions of the system can be accessed from the opening menu screen.

Play Games
The DS Lite not only plays cartridges made for the DS, but also plays games manufactured for the Game Boy Advance. In fact, you can insert one of each type of cartridge into the DS at the same time for when you are on the go and want multiple gaming options. To insert a Game Boy Advance, you must remove the cover from Slot 2 first.

Chat With Friends
You can send and receive wireless messages with up to 15 other DS Lite users as long as they are within range of you (about 65 feet). Select the "PictoChat" option from the DS menu screen and pick a chat room from the listing that appears. Use the stylus and keyboard to type out messages or draw pictures to communicate with friends.

Personal Organizer

While the functions are somewhat limited, the Nintendo DS has some of the features of an organizer. You can keep track of the date and time from the menu screen and input important dates such as your birthday. Access the system's functions by tapping the small icon on the bottom of the lower screen.

How to Create a DS Browser

The Nintendo DS is a hand-held video game device that comes with two screens: one to view, and one to touch as you play. The Nintendo DS has a lot of video games and accessories that you can play with while on the go. One of those game accessories is the Nintendo DS browser cartridge, which allows you to hop onto a Wi-Fi hot-spot or wireless router and browse the Internet. This cartridge is a little difficult to set up, but is very convenient.

1 Purchase the Nintendo DS browser cartridge on fyygame.com. For the original Nintendo DS and the Nintendo DS Lite, the only way to use a DS browser is to insert the browser memory-expansion cartridge. The cartridge can only be bought from the Nintendo Online Store. Go to the "Search Store" option on the right side of the page and search "Nintendo DS Browser."

2 Find a Wi-Fi connection. Boot up your new DS browser cartridge into your Nintendo DS, click on the "DS Browser" option and set up your Internet connection through the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection settings. You will need to select a keyboard language, your time zone, and the password, if any, for your wireless Internet connection. It is a step-by-step process that ends with your DS trying to find your Wi-Fi signal.

3 Restart your Nintendo DS. Once the Wi-Fi connection is made, you have to restart your Nintendo DS, by pressing, then re-pressing the power button.

4 After the restart, click on the "Nintendo DS Browser" option, when you have acquired your Wi-Fi signal, and you can now start browsing the Internet.

Fun and games at Christmas time part2

For both PS3 and Xbox 360, Red Dead Redemption is a gritty Western- themed game. It puts protagonist and former outlaw John Marston on the road to redemption. That happens after his wife and child are used as pawns by the newly formed Bureau of Investigation to put an end to the gangs staking their claim to the frontier. This is a must-have for any mature gamer, as it’s on many short lists (mine included) for Game of the Year.

Hockey lovers won’t want to miss NHL 11, also for both gaming systems, as it’ll be the only way the Toronto Maple Leafs will win the Stanley Cup (since the Detroit Red Wings will win the real thing this year).

For current system exclusives, check out Mass Effect 2 for the Xbox 360 (a PS3 version will be released in the New Year). It’s a dramatic role-playing game set in outer space, complete with planet-hopping and a wide variety of alien species to interact and ally with as you fight against the Reapers, a race of sentient machines.

The PS3 boasts exclusives, such as the racing simulator Gran Turismo 5, which might be more appropriate to car enthusiasts because of its realistic game play (check out Need For Speed Hot Pursuit for a more arcade-y racing game) and film noir-ish Heavy Rain.

If none of the games on this abbreviated list tickle your fancy, you can’t go wrong with point cards for the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii. These ever-reliable cards will allow the gamer to buy add-ons, downloadable content such as extra levels or maps, game accessories, and even full retail games via the Internet.

Happy holidays, and may all your gaming experiences be positive!

Fun and games at Christmas time part1

With a week left before Christmas Day, now’s the time to get some last-minute Christmas gift ideas for the gamer in your life.

A good number of big-budget games come out this time of year, in hopes of cashing in on the holiday spirit. I’ve put together a quick list of items that might be up your alley. Plus, depending on the proximity of your local video game retailer, you may even be able to avoid crazy mall parking and big-box retailers by getting these games elsewhere.

For the Nintendo Wii, you really can’t go wrong with the New Super Mario Bros., a franchise that Nintendo built its fortune on. Run and jump your way from point A to point B in a colourful world that’s fun for all ages. Similarly, Donkey Kong Country Returns brings more nostalgia to gamers who grew up with the lovable ape.

Golden Eye 007 breathes life back into a game that was released 13 years ago. Instead of Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond, you fill the shoes of Daniel Craig. The basics of the original movie plot have been preserved and updated — instead of using Bond’s watch, for example, you use a cellphone to scan documents and take pictures. Included is split-screen offline multiplayer and online multiplayer modes, which supports up to eight players.

The Xbox and PS3 have few exclusive releases between them, so check which system your giftee owns before you purchase anything.

X3Max Releases 3.50 Downgrade Support

X3Max has finally caught up, with the rest of the chips on the market. Today they released a 3.50 downgrade/service mode update for their X3Max dongle. For those planning to downgrade, Logic-Sunrise, is reporting that Blu-Ray playback is not lost when using thex3Max downgrade. X3Max has also provided an easy to follow tutorial, for anyone unfamiliar with the downgrading process.

Please note, this is not the highly anticipated 3.50 exploit, which was shown in a video earlier this month, by the X3Max team. The truth surrounding that exploit, remains to be seen.
